On November 25, BASF-YPC Company Limited (BYC) jointly organized with Jiangsu Maritime Safety Administration a forum titled as “Inland River Chemical Transportation & Sustainability” aiming at sharing experience and broadening minds to realize the sustainable development of the chemical products transportation on the inland rivers.

The rapid development of chemical industry inpels the booming of the water transportation of chemical products, while at the same time brings more possibility on the water contamination. Therefore a problem is aroused: how to protect our water resources as carrying out the conveyance of chemical material? This shall be the obligation of both the responsible producers and the supervision authorities.

Since October 23, 2004 when the first ship for chemical products berthed at BYC jetty, BYC has been adopting the advanced concepts from BASF on ship management and inspection, and enhanced the safety management on water transportation. In December 2008, BYC was the first company to allow only the double-bottom double-hull ships being employed in conveying its products, thus improved the admission standards for the ships on the Yangzi River.

All the participants of the forum had intensive communication on the issues like ship standards for chemical products conveyance, admission regulation, technical renovation, crew training and supervision measures, etc. They wished, through concerted efforts, to move forward the establishment of the relative laws and policies and achieve the sustainable development of the inland river transportation.
