Environmentally-friendly chemical experiments tailor-made for school kids aged 6-12

Innovative thinking and sustainable development concept help shape the future of kids

(October 16, 2006, Nanjing) BASF's proprietary educational programme - Kids' Lab opened today in BASF-YPC Co., Ltd. Located in Nanjing, China. School children from Dongwang Elementary School in Liuhe District where the company operates, were the first lucky ones to do three tailor-made chemical experiments. They had great fun while probing the magic of chemistry and science in the hands-on event. Dr. Bernd Blumenberg, president of the joint venure, attended the opening ceremony together with government representatives from Liuhe District.

Dr. Blubber, the BASF Kids' Lab ambassador showed kids around a virtual "Kids' Land" where they found with excitement that chemistry is all around them-it is hidden inside the clothes, food, toys, medicine, buildings, and so on. It's the innovation of chemistry that makes our life better.

"Innovative thinking is equally important with the concept of sustainable development for children," said Dr. Bernd Blumenberg. "This is the reason why we continue to stage Kids' Lab in China, to help more and more Chinese children learn more about innovation and sustainability and bring along with them when they grow up. In this way we are helping shaping their future. "

BASF-YPC Co., Ltd. is one of the leaders to showcase sustainable development in Nanjing. Aside from huge investment and the on-going expansion plan for the site, it pays equal attention to environment protection and being a good corporate citizen. In 2003, the company donated five fire-fighters to help upgrade the fight-fighting facilities from the district; In 2004, a total of 320,000 RMB was donated to students from poor families to buy computer and stationery; The company has so far conducted three dialogues with local government and neighbours about environment protection and safety management.

Kids' Lab will be open to all kids aged from 6-12 from the community free of charge, until October 22. This is third time that BASF staged the warmly-received education event in Nanjing, but this year is the first ever to move Kids' Lab into the community and exclusively for their children. It shows BASF-YPC Co., Ltd.'s care and long-term commitment to the neighbouring community.

Established by BASF in Germany, Kids' Lab was the first interactive chemical laboratory for children in Europe. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sino-German diplomatic relations, BASF for the first time introduced the concept of Kids' Lab abroad, bringing the program to Beijing, China in 2002. So far in China, a total of 56,000 students have participated in the hands-on program. It has received encouraging feedback not only from school children but also from parents, academic institutions as well as the media.
